My students advance their math skills in a comfortable, stress-free environment. I implement a research-based approach, Making Math Real™, to help students thoroughly understand math concepts, rather than memorize a rote procedure. Unlike a traditional math tutor, my services go well beyond just helping students get through their homework. With kindness, patience, and humor, combined with 19 years of experience using Making Math Real™ methods, I connect with my students and help them experience success in math.

Making Math Real ™, a multi-sensory and research-based approach to teaching math, is engaging and hands-on. With my Making Math Real training and experience, I skillfully integrate math concepts and procedures. Concepts are introduced at the concrete level using manipulatives, color-coding, and student-friendly language, thereby creating a comprehendible story.  This story is then systematically tied to the abstract math procedure. The students perform the same math as their peers, but with a clear understanding of why the procedure is what it is. Having comprehension of what’s happening and a picture to fall back on guides the procedures and helps develop long-term retention.

My sessions are designed to meet individual needs and build self-esteem in students. After assessing my students’ math strengths and areas of need, I develop a plan to help fill in their conceptual and skill gaps, with the goal of participating in their class’ curriculum and learning from their teachers. I continual observe my students’ comprehension and abilities, and break down skills into sub-skills as needed. As my students start learning math in a way that makes sense to them, their confidence grows and they become more engaged in their math classes. Most importantly, their perceptions of themselves as math students and their executive functioning skills improve when they learn strategies that allow them to succeed in math independently.  In addition to students who are struggling with math, I work with students who want to learn math skills not covered in their classes, who want to be prepared for a new school curriculum, and who are home schooled. Whatever the situation, I collaborate with parents and teachers to ensure that the student is best supported.
